COSMIC is the future of desktop LINUX.
Okay, that's probably an exaggeration, but it's likely to be in my future. I'll explain why.
By System76, the maintainers of Pop!_OS , the COSMIC desktop environment is an open source DE built from the ground up, in Rust, in two years. For a variety of reasons that I don't understand Rust is secure and stable due to it's memory management... or something. It doesn't matter much why.
It's also worth noting that the new compositor, cosmic-comp, is dependent on Wayland. System 76 is known for making NVIDIA and Wayland work seamlessly, but it's worth mentioning.

Sure, it looks a lot like GNOME (more on this below) but believe me, GNOME this isn't.
Those applets are freestanding Rust applications, easily extendable and containerized so that if one crashes it will recover with affecting the desktop as a whole.
